Magnetic Book is a book of scores for large string groups and improvising musicians.Some "pilot" versions have been produced already under the name Grand Magnetic: First produced at the Maijazz fesival in Stavanger in 2000, GM version 1 found its shape in a line up of MNO´s normal seven musicians, combined with a group of 14 string players from the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. The music, composed and designed by Jon Balke was a combination of existing matereal from MNO, arranged for this format and new composistions and improvised soundscapes designed specifically for the "grand" orchestra.The project has since been performed at the Copenhagen Jazz House with members of Concerto Copenhagen, including the excellent trio Fever Strings, and also in Trondheim, Norway, with the outstanding "Trondhjemssolistene".Based on the experiences from these "pilot" versions, a full work of new polyphonic streams of musical material has now been composed , and the music has been described as a "DNA string" of composed material with satelites of improvised events swirling around it.
