News & Updates

Siwan´s lates release Hafla has been nominated to the “Spellemann” award. This is Norways highest annnual prize for the recording industry. Ceremony on 15th april in Oslo.

May 2022: “More Than Ever” the new film by Emily Atef with music composed by Jon Balke, was part of the “Un Certain Regard” program at Cannes Film Festival and was screened on 21 may followed by a long-lasting standing ovation by an enthusiastic audience.

Quotes from international reviews of Hafla, Siwan´s latest on ECM:

Allaboutjazz.com (US): David Bruggink:

Hafla is an enthralling document of cross-cultural collaboration, of distinctive artistic voices presenting a singular, compelling vision”.

Le Monde, France:

“Un album d´un melancholie belle et penetrante”

thejazzworld.com

Siwan – Hafla is a celebration of an amalgamation of many cultures and styles. The Middle Eastern influence is exotic, and the multiple languages add richness. Balke’s music vision is concise and transfers beautifully to this tapestry of colors and emotions.

Financial Times:

Hafla centres on the words of an 11th-century Umayyad princess of Cordoba, Wallada bint al-Mustakfi, and of her lover Ibn Zaydun, Al-Andalus’s greatest poet. Wallada was criticised by imams but beloved by her fellow poets, not least Ibn Zaydun, who she encountered at a poetry competition and with whom she had a clandestine and ultimately doomed relationship.

SIWAN

20171112-DSC01852_DxO.jpg

SIWAN is a musical fantasy, born in the aftermaths of the invasion of Iraq. Contrary to the ideology of cultural and religious confrontation and agression, Siwan is all about co-existence. Departing from Jon Balkes compositions over the poetry of Al-Andalus, the orchestra weaves lines of communication between master musicians from Iran, Algeria, Turkey, USA and Europe. Siwan features: Mone Boutchebak vocals and quitra, Derya Turkan Kemenche, Jon Balke keyboards, Bjarte Eike violin, Pedram Khavarzamini Tombak, Helge Norbakken percussion, and the fabolous Barokksolistene string group.

The group´s third album Hafla on ECM records sadly coincides with the atrocities in Ukraine, thus making the history of Siwan framed by two meaningless wars , based on blatant lies and forgery. Which understates strongly the political intention of the project.

Batagraf

Batagraf is an open project with various collaborations. The core group is Helge Andreas Norbakken, Snorre Bjerck and Jon Balke. With this central unit, we collaborate along the lines of interplay between language and rhythm with poets, standup comedians, singers and instrumentalists

JØKLEBA is a trio with Audun Kleive, Per Jørgensen and Jon Balke. Formed in 1990 the trio quickly became a central voice in Scandinavian jazz, with a fresh approach to improvisation and musical energy. Jøkleba does only a few selected performances now, such as the Extremjazz 2017 in the waterfall of Skjervet near Voss

WARP

is a live concert concept with Jon Balke performing solo with a subtle architectural soundscape surrounding the audience. A new solo album was finished 10th december and released spring 2020.

EiBa

EiBa is a collaboration between Bjarte Eike and Jon Balke, born out of Siwan, but focused on the meeting point between contemporary electronic sound processing and renaissance/baroque music. The project transforms the space and resonance of traditional music and creates new reflections of the compositions of Biber, Bach, Pandolfi as well as Scandinavian folk music

SOUND DESIGN

IMG_5102.JPG

Jon Balke has been involved in a long series of stage productions and installations where the border between composition and sound design is blurred or non-existing. The co-production with Bjarte Eike at The Norwegian Opera in the Baroque Movements ballet evening, established the name EiBa as a unit that investigates a new territory merging baroque and renaissance music with electronics and triggered the development of a new software: Multitonar, a 8 channel randomizer of pitch and delay. The latest installation is the 3 corridor installations at Lillehammer Kunstmuseum and installations for the listening theatre of Fattigfolk (Poor People) at Peder Balke senteret in Toten, Norway (october), both in collaboration with visual artist Tone Myskja. The two also did a gallery installation at Molde International Jazzfestival. This winter Jon Balke will be working on scoring for Emily Atef´s film More Than Ever, to be premiered in april 2022.

The next show is in Oslo´s main galley Kunstnerforbundet, with an 8 channel sound installation based on the sound of voices of crowds.
